This is a common belief people have about churches of Christ. Nothing could be further from the truth!
Alexander Campbell, Barton Stone, and other members of the Restoration Movement, which began in 1800 in America, encouraged people to return to New Testament Christianity. The pattern for Christianity, however, did not originate with these men. The apostles revealed Christ’s will for the church 2,000 years ago and recorded it in the New Testament (see 1 Tim. 3:15).
There are many churches today that have the name church of Christ. Most of these are uniquely different than one another—Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints, Trinity United Church of Christ, Non-Institutional Church of Christ, etc. But in the Bible, when the apostles used the name “churches of Christ” (Romans 16:16) to describe congregations, they were referring to one kind of church. The apostles did not have a world of denominations like you and I have. They knew of only one type of church established by Christ, which is what they emphasized and encouraged people to believe in (Eph. 4:4).
This church strives for New Testament organization and worship, as taught by the apostles of Christ (2 Thess. 2:15). -- MT
