Jesus promised to build His church on the fact that He is the Son of God (Matt. 16:18). The apostles confirmed that the church is built on Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 3:11). Jesus promised that His kingdom would be established in the lifetime of those who lived while He was on earth (Mark 9:1). That was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost in Jerusalem (Acts 1:8; 2:1ff.). As a result of the Spirit's power, the apostles were able to preach a gospel that added people to the Lord's church (Acts 2:47). The Lord will deliver this kingdom to the Father on the final day (1 Cor. 15:24). This church is made up of all the saved of heaven and earth (Eph. 1:10). Those on earth are to assemble together with other Christians to worship God and do the work of the church (Heb. 10:24, 25). There is no earthly headquarters for these churches because Christ alone is its head (Eph. 1:22). Each church is to be autonomous and overseen by elders (Acts 20:28), who are also known as bishops, overseers, and pastors (Eph. 4:11). There is to be a plurality of these men in each church (Acts 14:23) and their authority is limited to the local church (1 Pet. 5:1, 2). Thus, there is no authority for men or bishops governing over a plurality of churches. There is much more to learn about the Lord's church, but this is a brief sketch to give you a general understanding.
